Senator Reverend Rubén Díaz to Governor Andrew Cuomo: Your Priorities are Out of Line with the Urgencies of the Day

New York State Senator Reverend Rubén Díaz (D-Bronx) has issued the following statement in response to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s meeting today to strategize about how to legalize homosexual marriage in New York State:

“I am deeply concerned that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is wasting valuable time and distracting his energies with a pure agenda issue like homosexual marriage after it has already been voted on by the State Legislature.  The floor vote let New York State’s law remain in tact so that marriage is between a man and a woman.

How can the issue of homosexual marriage demand the governor's attention at this critical time when we are supposed to be dealing with the Budget to protect the poor and the needy?

Does Governor Cuomo think he’s really gaining headway with such little time to spend on the urgencies of the day – which include maintaining minimal educational services and healthcare services in New York State?

In light of New York State’s staggering unemployment rates, looming budget proposals that threaten the education of New York’s children and the livelihood of thousands of teachers, and an end to Title XX Funding which will result in 10,000 senior citizens losing their centers in New York City alone, and the elimination of 2.5 million nutritious meals to feed our seniors – how can the issue of homosexual marriage in New York State demand this governor’s attention?

I would love to see Governor Cuomo remain focused on urgent matters so that our State and our residents don’t suffer from the very real crises that we need to avoid.”
