Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C – Poughkeepsie) announced that he has been appointed to serve as the Chairman of the Senate Codes Committee.
Senator Saland has been asked to chair the Senate Codes Committee. The Senate Codes Committee is one of the most prestigious and active committees in the State Senate and as Chairman, Senator Saland will oversee criminal justice policy affecting New York State.
“I view Senator Saland as the ideal person to take over this significant position as he has extensive knowledge of the criminal justice laws and has maintained a strong and active interest in this area throughout his career,” said Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos. “Not only has Senator Saland authored some of the most comprehensive child protection and domestic violence laws in our State’s history, but he is respected as a fair-minded and intelligent legislator who has the ability to work effectively across the aisle.”
“Serving the Senate as the Senate Codes Chairman is a great honor,” said Senator Saland. “Needless to say, this opportunity is one which fulfills a career-long aspiration and I deeply appreciate the Majority Leader’s confidence in my abilities to assume this significant role.”
Senator Saland will immediately assume the committee chairmanship. Roughly 700 bills are reviewed each legislative term by the Senate Codes Committee.
In addition to chairing the Senate Codes Committee, Senator Saland will be serving on the Senate Rules, Finance, Education, Judiciary, Insurance, Consumer Protection, Children and Families, and the Crime Victims, Crime and Correction Committees.
