ALBANY, N.Y. – Senator Timothy M. Kennedy, D-58th District, released the following statement regarding the death of Osama bin Laden, the leader of the terrorist group al-Qaida.
“The American military has been relentless throughout the war against terror, and the brave men and women who have led our nation’s pursuit of Osama bin Laden are to be commended for succeeding in the mission of toppling the leader of the al-Qaida terror network. As we reflect on the many sacrifices made and the many struggles endured since the September 11 terrorist attacks, let us also remember that there is still work to be done to protect our nation and keep our families safe,” Senator Kennedy said.
He added, “When terrorists attacked our country and senselessly killed thousands of Americans on September 11 nearly 10 years ago, we were determined to secure justice and make our world safer and more peaceful. The resolve, courage and resilience that our nation has demonstrated in the fight against terror has been largely fueled and sustained by the memory of the lives lost September 11 at the hands of bin Laden. We will continue to remember the men and women who perished that day and those who have sacrificed their lives to defend our nation in the days since, as we ensure veterans, first-responders and the families of victims and service members are supported and protected. While the fight to secure our nation’s safety goes on, the death of bin Laden brings with it a sense of justice and a reminder, as President Obama said Sunday night, ‘that America can do whatever it is we set our mind to.’”
