Military Voting Law Strengthened

NEW LEGISLATION SIGNED INTO LAW

New legislation that would allow more time for military absentee ballots to be mailed and counted in special elections has been signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

The legislation (S.3500) ensures that current state law conforms with the federal law requiring election officials to finalize and transmit the final ballot to military voters overseas within 45 days of a special election.

"This legislation is a great step towards ensuring our servicemen and servicewomen have their votes counted and are able to participate in special elections across New York state," said Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson). "It's imperative that those fighting for democracy are allowed the opportunity to participate in the electoral process and I applaud the Senate, Assembly and the Governor for their swift action in making this a reality," said Larkin.

The legislation takes effect immediately and is expected to be in effect for the upcoming special election in the 26th Congressional District.
