Red Cross Distributing Emergency Materials on Staten Island Saturday & Sunday

The American Red Cross is mobilizing hundreds of volunteers this weekend to hand out tens of thousands of bags containing emergency relief supplies to families in New York City affected by Hurricane Sandy.

“Hundreds of New Yorkers are coming together to load bags of relief supplies and then go block-to-block in some of the hardest hit communities,” said Josh Lockwood, CEO, American Red Cross Greater New York Region. “By engaging community volunteers who want to help their neighbors, the Red Cross will expand the reach of our thousands of workers already providing food, shelter and comfort.”

Each bag will contain things like trash bags, blankets, flashlights, batteries and hygiene kits. Items for infants like formula and diapers and cleaning supplies will also be available. Additionally, volunteers will hand out information packets with useful recovery resources and tips.

Throughout the weekend, volunteers will be distributing these items in heavily impacted neighborhoods throughout Staten Island. In addition to mobile teams, people can also receive meals and relief kits at the following fixed distribution sites on Saturday and Sunday (10 AM to 4 PM).
