Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that the New York State Senate recently passed a legislative resolution memorializing the life of North Merrick veteran Irving William “Bill” Halleran, who passed away in December at the age of 93.
“Bill Halleran was a very special person who loved his country and community and served them both with distinction. Whether it was as a member of the Navy, as an American Legion member, or a volunteer fireman, Bill never hesitated to lend a helping hand to those in need. I’m pleased that the Senate paid tribute to an incredible man who leaves behind an incredible legacy,” said Senator Fuschillo, who sponsored the resolution.
Mr. Halleran served our nation for six and a half years as a member of the United States Navy. He was serving on board the USS Phoenix at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 when it was attacked by the Japanese, bringing the United States into World War II.
Mr. Halleran served his community in the same dedicated manner he served his country. He moved to Merrick with his wife and family in 1949 and developed deep roots in the community. He was an active member of American Legion Post 1282 and served in the North Merrick Fire Department for over 60 years.
Mr. Halleran is survived by his wife Rose Marie, his three sons William, Frank, and Scott, eight grand-children and 10 great-grandchildren.
With the Senate passage of the legislative resolution, Bill Halleran’s accomplishments and record of service will forever be part of the New York State Senate’s official record.
