Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that the New York State Senate recently passed a legislative resolution honoring former New York Mets pitcher John Franco. Mr. Franco was honored for his commitment to preserving Italian-American Heritage as part of the recent Italian-American Day Celebration at the State Capitol.
“John Franco is the true embodiment of a proud Italian American,” said Senator Fuschillo, who cosponsored the resolution. “I’ve followed his career since he started with the Mets and couldn’t be happier to honor this great man for his many accomplishments. He may be known for his pitching career, but his humanity and service to the community are just as stellar.”
Mr. Franco pitched in the major leagues for nearly 22 years with the Cincinnati Reds, New York Mets, and Houston Astros, where he received an overall 2.89 ERA in 1,245.2 innings pitched. Mr. Franco had more saves during his career than any left-handed pitcher in history, placing him fourth all-time on the career saves list. He has also made appearance in 1,119 games, which places him third on the all-time career list. In 2001, Mr. Franco, a native of Brooklyn, New York, was named the Mets Captain and was honored on the Mets 40th Anniversary All-Amazin’ Team. Recently, he was inducted into the New York Mets Hall of Fame.
While Mr. Franco may be best known for his accomplishments in baseball, his accomplishments off the mound are just as admirable. His service to the community is something to be celebrated. Mr. Franco was presented a Distinguished Service Award from the Fire Department of New York for his efforts in assisting the firefighters and their families after the September 11th tragedy in 2001.
At Mr. Franco’s side throughout his many achievements have been his wife, Rose, and children, Nicole, JJ, and Ella. With the Senate passage of this legislative resolution , those achievements and record of community service will forever be part of the New York State Senate’s official record.
