Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that legislation he cosponsored to greatly strengthen oversight of LIPA has been signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo.
“For years, LIPA ratepayers have rightfully demanded greater oversight over LIPA and its financial practices. With this new law, they’re finally getting new levels of transparency and accountability from LIPA that are long overdue. I’m pleased that Governor Cuomo has approved these new protections for LIPA ratepayers,” said Senator Fuschillo, a member of the Senate’s Energy Committee.
Under the law, LIPA will be subject to regular and comprehensive independent management and operations audits undertaken by the New York State Department of Public Service.
The law also enables LIPA customers to file complaints about LIPA issues with the New York State Division of Consumer Protection. The Division is empowered to investigate and mediate these complaints or refer them to the proper state or local agencies where appropriate. Residents can contact the Division of Consumer Protection through their consumer helpline at 1-800-697-1220 or through their website, www.dos.ny.gov/consumerprotection.
The new law is already in effect.
