Squadron Announces Senate Passage of Bill to Create First-Ever Intercity Bus Permitting System, Creating Much-Needed Oversight

Passage Follows Agreement Between Squadron, Silver, City on Legislation, Which Will Designate Stops and Bring Order to Chinatown and City

ALBANY -- Today, State Senator Daniel Squadron welcomed Senate passage of his legislation to create the first-ever permit system for intercity buses, giving the city the power to regulate the industry and designate pick-up and drop-off locations. Senator Squadron released the following statement:

"With Senate passage of intercity bus permit legislation, we've taken a big step toward protecting communities and passengers alike as the low-cost bus industry continues to grow. 

"City permits for intercity buses will help end Chinatown's wild west atmosphere while allowing the city and state to identify problems before they become tragedies. This bus permit system will allow the city to work with communities to designate pick-up and drop-off stops, while creating much-needed oversight and providing the public with critical information about the low-cost bus industry. 

"Thank you to Speaker Silver, Senators Duane and Golden, Councilmember Chin, and the City for working with me to move forward this new and complex issue. I look forward to continuing to work with our partners on the federal and local levels to improve safety of this industry, and quality of life in Chinatown and across the city."
