Squadron: Dot Set to Begin Delancey Street Safety Improvements

Delancey Street Working Group Leads to Quick DOT Action to Improve Dangerous Corridor

NEW YORK – Today, State Senator Daniel Squadron welcomed the news that the NYC Department of Transportation will begin making safety improvements along Delancey Street on the Lower East Side. DOT presented the new safety plan for the dangerous corridor earlier this year, a result of the Delancey Street Safety Working Group that was convened by Senator Squadron and his colleagues.

The improvements will include a number of changes to the corridor: the shortening of 14 pedestrian crossings; lengthened crossing time at Delancey and Clinton Streets; improved street markings; a new painted pedestrian plaza between Clinton and Norfolk Streets aimed at calming vehicular traffic and improving the approach to the Williamsburg Bridge; and enhanced traffic patterns throughout the corridor.

The Delancey Street Safety Working Group will continue to meet to review these improvements and ensure that safety along the corridor is regularly evaluated.

“By working together, we were able to take dramatic steps toward a safer Delancey in a short amount of time.
