Senator Carlucci Announces First Annual Veterans Appreciation Essay Contest on Camp Shanks

NANUET, NY – Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Orange) today invited middle school students between 6-8^th grade to participate in his first annual Veterans Appreciation Essay Contest. 

The subject of the essay will be on the historic and pivotal role that Camp Shanks played during World War II.  Located in Orangeburg, Camp Shanks, dubbed Last Stop USA, served as a point of embarkation for troops departing overseas.  The camp housed approximately 50,000 troops spread over 2,040 acres and was the largest World War II Army embarkation camp, processing 1.3 million service personnel, including 75% of those participating in the D-Day invasion.

“We owe it to our kids to tell the important stories and significance of Camp Shanks, including how Rockland County played a vital role in our nation’s success during World War II,” said Senator Carlucci.  “The Greatest Generation and our veterans deserve to know that their legacy will remain intact, and this essay contest is just one small way we can show our appreciation for their service.”

Student essays should be written between 1,000 to 1,500 words and sent to Senator Carlucci’s district office no later than Monday, December 3, 2012, located at 95 South Middletown Road in Nanuet. 

Three (3) finalists will be selected and invited to attend the Senator’s Veteran’s Advisory Committee Appreciation Breakfast on Friday, December 7^th with their parents.
