Over 100 Veterans and Family Members Attend, Including World War II Servicemen
NYACK, NY – In commemoration of Pearl Harbor Day, Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Orange) today held his first annual Veterans Appreciation Breakfast, offering a free brunch to scores of veterans who served in combat in World War II up through the war in Afghanistan. Many of the attendees are members of the Senator's Veterans Advisory Committee.
The event featured 24 students from the Nyack High School Jazz Band that performed tribute songs in their honor. Following the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of the Star Spangled Banner, each veteran received a Senate Certificate of Achievement as well as a flag lapel pin, symbolizing their honor of country.
"We owe a great debt of gratitude to you all and also to a new generation of returning veterans who served our country overseas," said Senator Carlucci. "It is my hope for all Rocklanders to take in a sense of history while giving thanks to those who have the courage to serve our country."
A total of 100 veterans and their family members attended the two-hour long event that ran from 10:00am - noon at the Nyack Seaport Restaurant.
Along with his parents and teachers was Larson Larame, 6th grader from Kakiat Elementary school, who was crowned the winner of the Senator's Veterans Appreciation Essay Contest. Participants included students between the ages of 6-8th grade who had to write about the historic and pivotal role that Camp Shanks played during World War II.
The event marks Pearl Harbor Day, a date which honors all those who died in the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The infamous event triggered the entry of the United States into the second World War.
