Senator Carlucci Offers Mother’s Day Message for Breast Cancer Program

Residents Urged to Call Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline

Nanuet, NY (April 9, 2012) – Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Orange) today has joined with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program in their Mother’s Day Campaign, urging New Yorkers to call their toll free number to receive invaluable information and emotional support in coping with breast cancer.

“This Mother’s Day, let’s send a message to women all over Rockland County that you are not alone, and there are people ready to assist those coping with this illness,” said Senator Carlucci. “Breast cancer doesn’t just affect the person diagnosed, but it also affects his or her friends and family members. Programs like those at Adelphi are critical life saving vehicles for those to turn for advice and guidance.”

The program is run by Adelphi University based in Long Island, which boasts more than 100 highly trained volunteers and social work staff. These individuals provide professional services free of charge, and many are women who have had breast cancer themselves.

According to www.breastcancer.org, about 1 in 8 U.S. women (just under 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer of the course of her lifetime. In 2011, an estimated 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer were expected were expected to be diagnosed in women, including 2,140 new cases of the cancer diagnosed in men.

The hotline, established in 1980, is a project of the Adelphi University School of Social Work on Long Island.
