Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Orange) today met with First Class Scout Carrington Gregori of Troop 97 in New City to discuss the Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge and how young people can become more involved in public service.
“Scouts today perform a variety of core missions for our community that instill altruism and a deeper meaning of respect for one another,” said Senator Carlucci. “This program is just the latest example of how important it is to become engaged in the democratic process and learn we can all work to benefit the greater good.”
Gregori, a 12 year old and 7th grade student at Felix Festa Middle School in Clarkstown, organized a group of fellow boy scouts to choose an important issue that has a direct impact on fellow citizens of the community. Cub scouts then are required to meet with that branch of local government who has jurisdiction over the issue. For his project, him and Senator Carlucci discussed the ongoing issue and debate over whether or not New York State should require gas stations to have backup electric generators on site in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
