NANUET - Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Orange) today offered the following statement in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day:
"Today, we honor the vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and celebrate his life mission to achieve racial equality and ensure civil rights for all Americans.
Perhaps no other individual of the 20th century had such a profound impact on eradicating racism in our society. In the face of those that were content with the status quo, Dr. King preached for change. He offered a voice for those without one. He marched for justice and inspired thousands to join his cause through peaceful demonstrations all across the country. He had a dream, and to this day we continue to honor it.
Gone are the days of segregation and the wrongheaded notion of 'separate but equal'. No longer is a child ineligible to attend a particular school based upon the color of their skin, a woman forced to sit at the back of the bus, or a restaurant allowed to serve one group of people but not the other. To this end, justice has prevailed.
Although he was taken from us much too soon, Dr. King continues to live within us each and every day."
