Senator Skelos Honors Ida D’angelo as 2012 Woman of Distinction

Senate Majority Leader Dean G. Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) recently honored Ida D’Angelo, community leader from Valley Stream, as his 2012 Woman of Distinction.  Ida was honored with other notable women from across the state on May 15, 2012 at a reception in Albany.  

“I am proud to honor Ida D’Angelo as my 2012 Woman of Distinction,” said Senator Skelos.  “Ida is a pillar within the community of Valley Stream and has worked tirelessly over the past 50 years to help others and to improve the quality of life for all residents of our community.” 

Ida is an incredible woman whose dedication to her community is exemplary. A Valley Stream resident since 1960, she currently serves as president of the Friends of Bridge as well as president of the Board of Directors of the Waldinger Library’s Board of Trustees.

Friends of Bridge was founded in May 1970, following the death of a young man in the community from a heroin overdose. For 40 years, it has helped those who need treatment for substance abuse. Ida worked her way up through the executive board, serving as secretary, then vice president before becoming president three years ago.  During her tenure on the Board of Directors, Ida has led the charge to bring substance-abuse awareness programs to schools in Valley Stream and surrounding communities.

Last year, Ida took over as president of the Waldinger Library’s Board of Trustees. The board, appointed by the village, sets policies and fines, and recommends library services. She is also a Eucharistic minister at Blessed Sacrament Church, is a member of the local Historical Society. 

“Ida now joins the ranks of women whose accomplishments within their communities serve as an example to all.  Her dedication to her community empowers and encourages women across our state to take an active role in helping others and working to better their communities through hard work and determination.  She truly is a role model to all.” said Senator Skelos. 

The Women of Distinction program honors outstanding women from across New York State.  This program was created in 1998 to honor New York women who exemplify personal excellence, or whose professional achievements or acts of courage, selflessness, integrity or perseverance serve as an example to all New Yorkers.
