From Senator Jack M. Martins:
A Midsummer Classic
On Saturday, July 14, the Senator Jack M. Martins Classic 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament took place at the Dutch Broadway School in Elmont. Once again, the tournament was an overwhelming success as our young people displayed their athletic ability, sportsmanship and teamwork. This event exemplifies the togetherness of the community and what can be achieved when community members come together.
The classic wouldn’t be the success it is without the commitment and dedication of our volunteers. Year-round, their hard work and dedication goes toward making this event better each and every year. I want to thank all the volunteers for their efforts. I also want to thank the members of the community for being a part of the event as well as the sponsors for their support. Lastly, I would like to thank the 6,000 participants who attended, making for the biggest turnout in the tournament’s history.
From basketball to football to lacrosse and soccer, there was something for everyone. The U.S. Army Climbing Wall, N.Y. Islanders Street Hockey Shoot Out, Lacrosse Shot, U.S. Air Force Flight Simulations, 3-Point Shoot Out, Slam Dunk Contest and the boxing arena all added to the excitement the event generated.
We will never forget the game between the Cougars of the Henry Viscardi School and the Spartans from Elmont Memorial High School, who faced off for the second straight year. These young basketball enthusiasts showed not only their love of the game, but also their respect towards each other. They are an inspiration.
For this tournament to be successful, it takes a community. Each person who was a part of the classic brought their individual talents to make Saturday a memorable summer day for all involved. For that, I thank you. I couldn’t be more proud to represent you in the New York State Senate. I know that with the wonderful communities involved, I am already looking forward to next year.
