Herkimer Purple Heart Recipient Enshrined in Senate Veterans Hall of Fame

ALBANY, 05/22/12 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today paid tribute to Anthony J. D’Arpino of Herkimer as a 2012 inductee to the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame.

“Anthony D’Arpino is a true American hero, and more than worthy of inclusion in the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame,” said Senator Seward.  “Mr. D’Arpino displayed superior bravery and courage while in uniform and, upon returning home, dedicated himself to the betterment of his community while continuing to advocate for his fellow veterans.  My whole-hearted congratulations to Tony and his fellow inductees.  Further, my thanks to all veterans past and present.  Your courage, sacrifice and achievement are something each and every American can be proud of.”

Anthony J. D’Arpino served in the United States Army during World War II.  He was wounded during the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Purple Heart for his valor.  D’Arpino received several other awards for his courageous service to his country including the bronze star, combat infantry badge, Presidential Unit Citation for Rhine River crossing, European Theatre of operations medal.

Back at home, D’Arpino served as a Cub Scouts pack leader, youth  sports coach, and member and president of the Herkimer Central School Board of Education.  He has also been a long-standing advocate for New York’s libraries, serving as trustee and president on the Herkimer Library Board, the Mid-York Library Board and the New York State Library Board. 

Perhaps most dear to his heart though is the Purple Heart award.  His name is listed on the roll of honor at the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor in New Windsor, New York, and the Military Order of the Purple Heart flag is now flown above Yankee Stadium due to D’Arpino’s tireless efforts.

The New York State Senate Veterans Hall of  Fame  inductees may be former members  of  any  branch  of  the  United States Armed Forces.  The exceptional men and women are chosen for this prestigious honor based on either  service in combat or notable work performed after discharge from the service.

D’Arpino was recognized during a special ceremony at the Capitol along with other inductees to the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame.  A legislative resolution (J4797) honoring D’Arpino and the rest of the hall of fame class of 2012 was adopted unanimously by the state senate.
