Senator John Bonacic (R,C,I - Mt. Hope) honored William H. Payne of Ulster County as his 2012 Inductee to the New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame.
“It is my honor to recognize Bill, today,” said Senator Bonacic. “Bill bravely served as a Marine in Vietnam and has made great sacrifices to protect and serve our country. Bill has tirelessly served not only his country but also his state and community. He is an outstanding citizen and embodies the definition of integrity.”
William H. Payne enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1968 and served in the Vietnam war. He has received countless awards including; the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four battles stars, USMC Rife Marksman badge, the New York State Defense Liberty Medal, the NYS Long and Faithful Service Medal, the NYS Medal for Merit, and many more. Additionally, Bill has spent his civilian life serving the community in various capacities within the Probation Department, serving as parole office and also as a law enforcement instructor.
Bill is a published author who recently penned The Veteran in a New Field, a Civil War mystery novel of the Irish Brigade set in Saugerties, NY at the Mountain House in 1866. He is currently working on his second novel.
The New York State Senate Veterans' Hall of Fame was created in 2005, to honor and recognize outstanding veterans from the Empire State who have distinguished themselves both in military and civilian life. Their meritorious service to our nation deserves the special recognition that only a Hall of Fame can provide, as a fitting expression of our gratitude and admiration.
