New York Association for Pupil Transportation Honors State Senator
The New York Association for Pupil Transportation announced today its selection of State Senator John J. Bonacic (R,C,I – Mount Hope) as “Legislator of the Year 2011”.
The Association thanked the Senator for his help with the introduction and passage of S.5806, legislation which amends the vehicle and traffic law, updating a list of crimes that can disqualify an individual from driving a yellow school bus.
We greatly appreciate Senator Bonacic’s leadership and dedication,” said Peter Mannella, Executive Director of the New York Association of Pupil Transportation. “ The Senator’s willingness to not only listen to our concerns, but to also introduce and ensure passage of this legislation is exemplary. Such legislation is vital to the continued safety of the 2.3 million children who ride our school buses each day.
“This legislation is essential to protect students,” said Senator John Bonacic. “Without updating Section 509 of the Penal Code violations, an individual convicted of a variety of sex crimes, including crimes against children would be able to pass the required background check and become a school bus driver. I commend the New York Association for Pupil Transportation’s vigilance and dedication in protecting the children of New York State.”
