Senator Flanagan Joins With Stony Brook University To Promote Prostate Cancer Awareness

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) is joining with Stony Brook Medicine’s Prostate Care Program to provide men throughout our community with free prostate screenings in recognition of Prostate Cancer Awareness week, which begins on Monday, September 17th.  

Under the direction of Medical Director Howard L. Adler, the program will offer screenings from Monday, September 17th through Thursday, September 20th at the Stony Brook Urology office located in Suite 500 at 24 Research Way in Setauket.

Screenings are available each day from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  Due to limited availability and required appointments, residents who wish to take advantage of this free program are urged to call HealthConnect at 631-444-4000 to schedule their screening.

Informed consent testing and examinations are recommended for all men over the age of 40.

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), prostate cancer is the 2nd most common cancer in American men and is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind only lung cancer.  In total, prostate cancer accounts for about 9% of cancer-related deaths in men.

The ACS estimates that during this year, over 186,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the United States and over 28,000 American men will die of prostate cancer this year alone.  

For those at risk, annual screenings have proven to be a very effective tool in early detection and, in conjunction with the proper medical treatment, have also shown to significantly improve a person’s chances of long-term survival.

“Prostate cancer can be beaten if found early and it is important for everyone to utilize all the available opportunities to protect their health.  This free event will provide a great resource to many men in our community and I applaud the entire staff at Stony Brook Medicine’s Prostate Care Program for their efforts,” stated Senator Flanagan.
