Senator Flanagan’s Drug Drop Off Event Gets Over 175 Pounds Of Household Drugs Out Of Community

To help community members get unwanted drugs out of their households, Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) recently hosted a Drug Drop Off event at the Selden Fire Department.  The event, which was held with the cooperation of the Suffolk County Police Department and the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, enabled community members to drop off unwanted drugs anonymously and helped collect over 175 pounds of drugs.

All substances that were dropped off at the event were then safely disposed of by representatives from the Suffolk County Police Department.  That safe disposal will benefit the environment since improper disposal of medications, such as pouring them down the drain or flushing them down the toilet, can potentially pollute local waterways. 

It will also eliminate the risk of these drugs accidentally getting into the hands of small children or those who might misuse them.

“Helping get unnecessary and expired drugs out of our community is a great way to help fight drug abuse and protect our environment and I thank the Suffolk County Police Department, the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence and the Selden Fire Department for their assistance.  I also thank area residents who took the time to attend to make sure that any unwanted drugs were safely disposed of and did not harm our community in any way,” stated Senator Flanagan.

If anyone who missed Senator Flanagan’s recent event has any unwanted drugs in their household, the Suffolk County Police Department operates the “Operation Medicine Cabinet” program at each of Suffolk’s seven police precincts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  This program enables members of the community to drop off unwanted, unused, or expired medications in secure receptacles that resemble mailboxes anonymously at their convenience.
