With so many stories in the media highlighting the dangers of synthetic marijuana and bath salts, today’s announcement by Governor Cuomo is a step in the right direction. But the severity and increasing number of these incidents make it abundantly clear that even stronger actions need to be taken as soon as possible.
That is why I am urging the Assembly to join the Senate in protecting our young people by passing legislation I sponsored with Senators Joe Griffo and Betty Little. That bill (S.6694), which passed the Senate in April, criminalizes the possession and sale of these dangerous substances in the same way as marijuana and methamphetamines. These synthetic drugs pose a real danger to our residents and we need to enact strong criminal penalties that make it clear our state is serious about getting them off our streets.
