Senator Serrano Brings Free Mammogram Van to the 28th District!

José M. Serrano

June 8, 2012

As part of an initiative to detect and prevent breast cancer, Senator Serrano and the Project Renewal Scan Van Program sponsored free mammogram screenings in the 28th Senate district. Eligible women received free screenings in Yorkville, East Harlem, the Bronx and Roosevelt Island.

The National Cancer Institute recommends that women age 40 and older have a screening mammogram every one to two years. Mammograms can help detect a breast cancer tumor years before a lump can be felt by touch.

"It is extremely important for all women over 40 to get an annual mammogram," said Senator Serrano.

"Unfortunately, many women in New York City do not have health insurance and can’t afford to get a costly mammogram screening each year. Project Renewal Scan Van offers a life saving resource that will keep our communities happy and healthy. Breast cancer has taken far too many of our mothers, sisters, and daughters. We must be proactive and take advantage of the resources available that allow us to take an active part in the early detection of breast cancer."
