Senator José M. Serrano today participated in the celebration of the completion of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park. This event was sponsored by the Four Freedoms Park Observatory, with special guests at the dedication ceremony including former President Bill Clinton, Governor Andrew Cuomo, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, U.S. Ambassador William Vanden Heuvel, and American television Journalist Tom Brokaw.
“Today’s dedication is an opportunity to reflect on President Roosevelt’s legacy and the four freedoms he articulated so well; freedom of speech and expression, worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear,” said Senator Serrano. “This Park will help serve as an important reminder to all of us of President Roosevelt’s leadership and commitment to human rights. Our nation was profoundly changed by his bold presidency, and I am thankful for the opportunity to commemorate his wonderful legacy,” continued Senator Serrano.
“This is also an opportunity to celebrate the stunning memorial designed by American architect Louis I. Kahn. Parks not only improve our quality of life, but they also beautify our neighborhoods and improve our health. The opening of the Four Freedoms Park provides Roosevelt Island residents with increased opportunities for community engagement, involvement, and enjoyment, and in many ways the park is representative of the freedoms President Roosevelt fought so hard to ensure,” said Serrano.
In addition to today’s dedication ceremony, Roosevelt Island Residents’ Day will allow residents to enjoy a special preview of the memorial before it becomes open to the general public. The event will take place on Saturday, October 20th from 11am-3pm, with Senator Serrano serving as a special guest speaker.
Senator Serrano has been a long time advocate for the preservation of parks and currently serves as Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation, and sits on the Committee for Environmental Conservation.
