Senator Serrano co-sponsored with Councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito the 6th Annual Teen Fair “Step Up, Speak Out, Take Action” in East Harlem. The fair, designed to bring awareness to youth and gun violence within the community, gathered local residents and community organizations to show the importance of community involvement.
During the festivities Senator Serrano offered a call to action: "We have to combat the issue of gun violence plaguing the youth in our community to ensure that our streets are a safer place. It is important to provide our children with a warm environment where they can feel comfortable showcasing their talents and instill the importance of giving back to the community at an early age," said Senator Serrano.
Participants enjoyed food, music, backpack giveaways, and local talent showcases all to raise community involvement in youth empowerment. The fair took place outside the Senator’s District Office at 157 East 104th Street beginning at the corner of Lexington Avenue and continued down the block to the intersection of 104th Street and 3rd Avenue.
