(Roosevelt Island, NY)- Senator José M. Serrano and the American Red Cross in Greater New York sponsored an Emergency Preparedness Workshop on Roosevelt Island today. This event was co-sponsored by Council Member Jessica Lappin and Assembly Member Micah Kellner and was attended by local community residents.
The American Red Cross provided attendees with a free interactive CD that can be utilized to create a customized evacuation plan and other tools that will help any family get prepared in case of an emergency. Attendees learned how to create a family disaster plan, build and maintain a supply kit (To Go Bag), and keep loved ones safe and informed during times of disaster.
“The more informed we are about how we can prepare for an emergency, the safer we will be," said Serrano. "This requires a concerted effort, by families and communities working together to ensure relief in the aftermath of stressful situations. I would like to thank the American Red Cross in Greater New York for designing a plan that includes preparing a To Go Bag- containing essential food items and supplies, identifying a meeting place near your home as well as outside of your neighborhood, planning for the needs of seniors and people with disabilities, and making sure you have a designated friend or relative to call if your phone lines are down. These simple, yet effective steps, can make a life saving difference in the event of an emergency."
