Senate Passes Griffo-Sponsored Bill to Name Highway for Deputy Kurt Wyman
(Utica) - State Senator Joseph A. Griffo today announced that a portion of New York State’s highway system between Clinton and Deansboro will be named after Oneida County Sheriffs’ Deputy Kurt Wyman following passage of the bill (Senate bill 6531) Griffo sponsored to honor the memory of Wyman, who was killed in the line of duty on June 7, 2011.
Griffo said State Route 12-B from College Street in Clinton to State Route 315 in Deansboro will be designated and known as the "Deputy Kurt Wyman Memorial Highway," complete with signage to ensure that Deputy Wyman’s name and sacrifice are remembered and honored.
Griffo said that he was honored to carry the legislation after speaking with the Oneida County Police Benevolent Association, who endorsed the measure.
“Devoting his life and career to serve and protect, Deputy Kurt Wyman exemplified what it truly means to give of himself. He provided vital police services, constantly keeping with the noble mission of the Oneida County Sheriff's Office,” Griffo said. “Deputy Kurt Wyman was devoted to his family as well as his country. He strived to be a good husband, father, and son, driven by a passion that defined his character. Kurt Wyman leaves behind a legacy which will long endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all he served and befriended.”
Oneida County Sheriff Robert M. Maciol expressed similar sentiment, “Deputy Kurt Wyman made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of this community. We are working hard and working together to show our gratitude and to never forget the courage that he carried with him every day while on the job.”
The bill is now before the Assembly where its companion version (A.9396) is sponsored by Assemblymember Claudia Tenney.
