New York – State Senator Liz Krueger (D-Manhattan) released the following public statement in support of the Silver Ribbon Campaign’s Trust Women Week, a week-long collaborative effort and ‘online mobilization’ for women’s reproductive health and reproductive rights:
“Last week marked the 39th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade, which acknowledged common sense – women have a right to govern themselves, their health, and their bodies.
“ Yet nearly 40 years later, women’s reproductive rights and women’s health providers are under attack by a loud and extreme minority who are wielding political influence as a weapon against women who want to make their own health choices and organizations like Planned Parenthood that work to help them. Half of all U.S. pregnancies are unintended, but even in the face of this fact, this vocal minority is working to restrict women’s reproductive health options and birth control.
“The Silver Ribbon Campaign’s message is spot-on: it’s time to Trust Women. We’re well into the 21st century, and we must stop treating reproductive health as somehow different or taboo. President Obama took a major step forward last week by reaffirming that all employers’ health plans must cover birth control.
“In New York, we must take the next step by passing the Reproductive Health Act, which Gov. Cuomo included in his State of the State message. New York’s outdated public health law must be modernized to properly include women’s reproductive health.”
