Smith is receiving this honor in recognition of his having served as the first African American Majority Leader and President of the New York State Senate and for reforming the Senate to a more fair and transparent legislative body.
(New York, NY)- Renowned Actor Denzel Washington, on behalf of the Boys & Girls Club of Mt. Vernon will present his longtime friend and former college roommate NYS Senator Malcolm A. Smith with the Historic Leadership Award at the organization’s 100th Anniversary Gala. Smith is receiving this honor in recognition of his having served as the first African American Majority Leader and President of the New York State Senate and for reforming the Senate to a more fair and transparent legislative body.
“I am both humbled and honored to accept this award. To have my work in the State Legislature heralded by this dynamic organization… my gratitude knows no bounds,” Smith said.
The event is being co-chaired by Real Estate Mogul Stephen Ross, Detroit Pistons Shooting Guard Ben Gordon and Actress Phylicia Rashad. Several celebrity guests will be on hand including Actor and Comedian JB Smoove and NBA Champions Rodney McCray and Gus Williams.
Actor Danny Glover will also share in the evening’s festivities as a special guest to Senator Smith.
