Brooklyn – In an effort to help protect residents from identity theft, State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) is today announcing plans to host a free shredding event on Saturday, October 6, 2012, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Senator Golden has made arrangements for a shredding truck to be parked outside his district office located at 7408-5th Avenue and is inviting the community to bring personal documents in which they wish to shred.
Recent reports indicate that identity theft affects over 9 million Americans every year, is the fastest growing crime in America, and is the most reported consumer fraud complaint. Senator Golden is also making available a list of steps to prevent identity theft as published by the New York State Division of Consumer Protection.
Senator Marty Golden stated, “We all have a pile of papers in our house that we hope to one day get a chance to shred. This is a great opportunity to stop by my office and get rid of those forms, applications, receipts and more in a safe way. Shred those papers so to make sure you have taken every precaution against the crime of identity theft.”
