S4313B creates safe stops for Interstate bus carriers, requires companies to receive permits from the City to obtain bus stop privileges
Brooklyn, NY - Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I) is announcing that legislation he sponsored, S4313B, that was introduced over a year ago, has been signed by Governor Cuomo and made law. The legislation requires Interstate bus carriers to obtain permits from the City in order to obtain a location where they can legally and safely load and unload passengers. The permitting process will now enable New York City to assure that all interstate buses are insured and meeting required safety standards, thus making our streets safer for all.
"Prior to today's bill signing, private bus companies were causing hazards for passengers, pedestrians, motorists and residents," stated Senator Golden "Finally Interstate bus companies will be required to apply for permits in order to pick up and drop off in designated areas. This will also allow for stronger oversight of bus companies who operate inside the City of New York. I am proud to have sponsored this legislation and glad that we can bring common sense solutions to the ongoing issue of unregulated buses in our great city."
The low cost passenger services offered by various private interstate bus services have grown exponentially in recent years. This has complicated the city's ability to manage the increased congestion where these buses load and unload passengers, creating safety concerns for all residents.
Senator Golden continued, "The safety of New Yorkers is always my highest priority. This law gives the city the authority to regulate these companies, and provides relief to our communities and our tourists. I want to thank Governor Cuomo for signing the bill, Assembly Speaker Silver for being it's sponsor in his chamber, and the New York City Department of Transportation for supporting our efforts. Today, we can say that the streets of New York are a safer place to live, to work, and to commute on."
