October Is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Senator Dilan stresses the importance of early detection

Senator Martin Malavé Dilan (D-Brooklyn) is urging women to take advantage of free breast cancer support and referral services available throughout New York City this October during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

According to the state Department of Health, one in eight women will develop breast cancer.

“Early detection is the best defense woman have against breast cancer,” said Senator Dilan. “While most mammograms prove to be negative, breast cancer remains the most common form of cancer among women in New York. It is important to be sure whether or not you are in the clear or need to get the care and support required as soon as possible.”

Through the New York State Cancer Services Program eligible women and men can access breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screenings at no cost in participating clinics, health centers, doctors' offices and hospitals in every county and borough in New York State.

In the event a breast cancer screening comes back positive, the program provides additional testing and full Medicaid coverage at no cost for the duration of your cancer treatment.

New Yorkers eligible for the free cancer screenings include those whom: do not have health insurance or have health insurance that does not cover the cost of these screenings; cannot pay for the screenings; and meet income eligibility and age requirements.
