As the school year draws to a close, our school children naturally turn their thoughts to summer vacation and time away from the classroom. It is important, though, to make sure that when school ends in June, we encourage students to keep learning.

That is why I am inviting students in the fourth through sixth grades to continue to explore the exciting world around them by participating in the 2012 New York State Summer Reading Program.

Students who are interested in participating can visit www.nyread.com to sign up and create an online journal to keep track of their reading progress throughout the summer. Students who complete their journal and send it back to me will receive a special Summer Reading Certificate and bookmark commemorating their achievement. The website also contains fun activities and games, ideas for reading lists and information on public libraries in our area.

It is my hope that our local school children take part in this educational program and use it as their passport to a world of learning and imagination. If you have any questions or would like more information about the Summer Reading Program, please don’t hesitate to contact my office at 1-888-568-9816.
