Senator Owen H. Johnson joined Assemblyman Phil Boyle in commemorating Southside Hospital’s 100th Anniversary with a Legislative Resolution presentation at a celebration that took place at the Hyatt Regency Long Island in Hauppauge on October 21, 2011.
For over a century, Southside Hospital, with its expert staff, has had a long and sustained commitment to the health and welfare of the citizens of Long Island. Established in 1911 by a group of physicians, Southside Hospital began as the Babylon Hospital, a 21-bed, non-profit facility located in a frame house in Babylon. From its inception until the late 1950s, Southside Hospital was the only hospital between Rockville Centre and Southampton, New York.
Over the years, Southside Hospital has undergone numerous expansions and today, is a complex comprised of several buildings. As part of North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System, Southside Hospital has the ability to bring the latest medical innovation, education and clinical advances to residents in Suffolk County.
As part of North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System's Harvey Cushing Institutes of Neuroscience, Southside Hospital is a state-designated stroke center. Its brain injury rehabilitation unit provides expertise and care for those recovering from the most severe cases of brain trauma. Southside Hospital has the only New York State designated brain injury unit on Long Island.
At the forefront of cutting-edge technology, Southside Hospital uses innovative remote presence technology, the assistance of a robot in the Emergency Room, as part of its Telestroke program which connects patients at the Southside Hospital Emergency Room, via robot, to a North Shore University Hospital stroke neurologist 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In addition to its cardiac and neuroscience programs, Southside Hospital provides orthopedic, obstetric and gynecological specialties.
Southside Hospital is currently home to a top-flight cardiac surgery and interventional program with a new cardiac catheterization lab. In conjunction with its expanding cardiovascular services, Southside Hospital recently added a cardiac surgery program headed by Dr. Alan Hartman, one of New York State's finest cardiac surgeons. Southside Hospital's newly added hybrid operating room allows complex cases, often requiring a combination of procedures from multiple specialists, to be completed in a single operating room.
