State Senate Welcomes Ft. Drum Commander, Major General Mark A. Milley

Honors Decorated Leader with Official Resolution

Senator Patty Ritchie announced State Senate passage of a unanimous Resolution welcoming Major General Mark A. Milley, the newest commander of Fort Drum and the 10^th Mountain Division.

“Major General Milley is no stranger to Fort Drum or the US Army’s most deployed military unit. He led  the 10th Mountain Division's 2nd Brigade Combat Team to Afghanistan in 2003,
and to Iraq in 2004,” Senator Ritchie said. “Since his arrival in Jefferson County, he has impressed me as someone who cares very much about the men and women he commands and who is dedicated to working with New York State to keep Fort Drum as one of the top assets in our national defense.”

Major General Milley succeeded Lt. Gen. James L. Terry, who commanded the 10^th Mountain Division since 2009, and was recently named head of V Corps and the Seventh Army in Europe.

Major General Milley served as Deputy  Director for Operations for the Joint Staff in Washington, DC before his assignment to Northern New York.

Major General Mark A. Milley graduated  in  1980 from Princeton University with a bachelor's degree in political science. He earned master's degrees from Columbia University's international  relations program, and from the United States Naval War College's national security and strategic studies curriculum. He also is a graduate of the MIT seminar XXI national security studies program.

His awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal (2OLC), the Legion of Merit (2OLC), the Bronze Star Medal (3OLC), the Meritorious Service Medal (5OLC), the Army Commendation Medal (4OLC), the Army Achievement Medal (1OLC), the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the National Defense Service Medal (1 Bronze Star), the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (2 Bronze Stars), the  Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Iraq  Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Korean Service Defense  Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon (4), the NATO Service Medal, the Multinational Force and the Observers Medal, the Combat Infantryman  Badge (with star), the Expert Infantryman Badge, the Master Parachutist Badge, the Scuba Diver Badge, the Ranger Tab, the Special Forces Tab, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge.
