Larkin Cosponsors Legislation to Exempt Libraries From the Mta Payroll Tax

Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) today cosponsored legislation to repeal the onerous Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Mobility Tax – otherwise known as the payroll tax - on libraries in the MTA region.

“I am very happy to join my colleagues in sponsoring such an important piece of legislation,” said Senator Larkin.  “Our libraries have never been able to afford this burdensome tax and it is my hope that the Legislature and the Governor will work together to ensure this legislation is signed into law as soon as feasibly possible.  We must do all we can to ensure the survival and growth of our local libraries and easing the tax burden for them is a giant first step towards achieving this goal,” said Larkin. 

This legislation, sponsored by Senator Jack Martins, would exempt public and free association libraries located in the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District from paying the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Mobility Tax (MTA payroll tax) in the same manner of exemption currently encompassing public and private schools. 

The bill is currently awaiting action in the Senate Committee on Investigations and Government Operations.
