Yonkers, NY - Democratic State Senate Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins was honored on October 2nd by the Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Committee at their Fall Luncheon. Leader Stewart-Cousins was given the Trailblazer of Democracy award for her leadership of the Senate Democratic Conference and her dedication to progressive, common sense approaches to ensuring social and economic justice for all New Yorkers. Leader Stewart-Cousins’ fellow honorees at the luncheon were former-Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and civil rights activists Edie Windsor and Roberta Kaplan.

“I am deeply honored to receive this recognition from Eleanor’s Legacy and I thank this incredible organization for their commitment to me and all progressive women seeking elected office,” Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said. “I was proud to be supported by Eleanor’s Legacy when I first ran for the State Senate in 2004 and grateful that they stuck with me when I ran and won in 2006. To receive this award as the first woman to lead a conference in the State Legislature is truly humbling. I look forward to continuing my efforts to build a strong Senate Democratic Conference that will fight for the progressive issues and solutions to rebuild this great state.”

Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Committee Founder Judith Hope said, “Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins is a passionate advocate for progressive values and fighting for women’s rights. As leader of the Senate Democrats, Andrea has been at the forefront of the fight for equality in New York State and has worked tirelessly to advance pro-woman legislation.
