The State Senate today gave final legislative approval of legislation authorizing the Village of Lake George to grant peace officer status to its seasonal constables. Peace officers may issue traffic tickets and issue appearance tickets for various violations of state law.
“This legislation was requested by the village to continue a program recognized by the state ten years ago for its effectiveness saving taxpayer dollars,” said Little, the Senate sponsor. “These constables serve a vital need, maintaining peace and ensuring everyone’s safety during the busy tourist season in the village.”
The designated peace officers are not authorized to carry a firearm.
The bill will return to the Assembly before being sent to the governor for final approval. Assemblyman Dan Stec carried the measure in the Assembly.
