Students can track reading progress, share with family and friends
OLEAN – With the end of the school year in sight, many students are anxiously awaiting the summer months. To keep their skills honed and minds sharp, the New York State Senate, in conjunction with the New York State Library, has launched the Summer Reading Program for students across the State.
“Opening a book can take students on an adventure that could eclipse any type of summer vacation. A book can be enjoyed on a sunny day under a tree, on the beach or inside during one of summer’s rainy days. Hopefully students take advantage of this fantastic program that promotes reading so that they can hit the ground running when their classes resume in September,” said Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean).
Participating students will use an online journal, which can be accessed by visiting www.young.nysenate.gov, to keep track of their reading progress throughout the summer. Children who submit a completed journal will receive a Summer Reading Certificate. Hardcopies of the journal and other materials can be provided upon special request.
If students need more reading material for the summer months, they should stop by their local public library and peruse the expansive selection. To find the closest public library, please visit http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/libs/publibs/.
