Senator Tkaczyk Announces Veterans Credit for NY Civil Service Exams

State Senator Cecilia Tkaczyk today announced good news for Veterans -- the passage of legislation in the State Senate allowing veterans and disabled veterans credits to be added to civil service examination scores.

 “The military training our veterans receive provides valuable leadership skills and experiences that are highly desirable to any employer, including State and local governments,” Tkaczyk said. “So while this measure will help veterans, I believe it will also benefit our civil workforce.”

Senate Bill S.280 will allow the five point veteran’s credit to be added to civil service examination scores even if eligibility is established after the examination has been taken.  Veterans applying the credits will be less limited by time constraints, making them more likely to be hired to civil service positions including the state police.

 Senator Tkaczyk noted that Veterans are also more likely to be unemployed than the average citizen, and, she said, “they deserve better after serving our country. With this bill we can increase employment opportunities for our vets, and put their extensive training and experience to work for the people of New York.”
