Senator Fuschillo Announces $815 Million to Help Long Island Continue to Recover From Superstorm Sandy

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that Long Island will be receiving $815 million in funding for several critical Superstorm Sandy recovery and rebuilding infrastructure projects. The projects include upgrading Long Island’s utility system, strengthening vulnerable bridges for future severe weather, and rehabilitating wastewater treatment plants. 

     “Securing this additional funding is good news for Long Island. This is another step forward in our ongoing efforts to recover from Superstorm Sandy and will help ensure that our area is better prepared for future storms,” said Senator Fuschillo.

     Projects that will be undertaken include:

     • Significantly upgrading Long Island’s utility system by allowing PSEG-Long Island to install a new outage management system and other improvements to identify power outages and restore power much faster.

     • Strengthening several vulnerable bridges along the southern portion of the Meadowbrook Parkway and other areas which are close to water to ensure they are better protected in case another storm hits.

     • Rehabilitation and Mitigation of the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant in Nassau County, which was heavily damaged during Superstorm Sandy, as well as the Bergen Point Sewage Treatment Plant in Suffolk County.

     The funding is in addition to the $451 million in housing awards which have been approved for Long Islanders whose homes were damaged or destroyed by Superstorm Sandy, and the $444 million in reimbursement funding to Long Island municipalities for repairs and recovery services.
