Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) today announced that New York State has provided $624,869 to the Village of Freeport in Nassau County for reimbursement of costs incurred by the village following the impact of Superstorm Sandy. The Village of Freeport utilized labor, equipment, material, rented equipment, and contract services to remove the debris from right of ways and public property.
"Superstorm Sandy had a devastating impact on the Village of Freeport. The Village has spent significant resources to rebuild and recover from the damage as quickly as possible. This reimbursement funding will greatly benefit the Village of Freeport and support its ongoing restoration efforts," said Senator Fuschillo.
“The impact of Sandy created significant challenges for municipalities throughout the metropolitan New York City region, Long Island and the Lower Hudson Valley,” Governor Andrew Cuomo said. “Local communities like the Village of Freeport had to act quickly, remove storm debris and try to get back on their feet as soon as possible. I am very pleased to be able to direct these funds back to the village and help them continue in their overall restoration effort. ”
The release of these federal funds are part of ongoing and anticipated future reimbursements the state will administer and pay to the affected municipalities. Municipalities are being reimbursed based on a variety of projects that include construction and demolition, sand and vegetative debris removal, EOC activations, evacuations, inspections and emergency IT repairs and restoration and the Sheltering and Temporary Essential Power (STEP) program. The state will continue to make these reimbursement payments as FEMA obligates the funds.
