Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee, announced an over $80 million investment for road and bridge projects on Long Island. The investment will be funded through the New York Works State Highway and Bridge Project Acceleration Program.
“Road and bridge projects are necessary for safety and are also valuable economic development tools that put people to work and generate revenue for local businesses. This is a major investment in Long Island’s economy that will create jobs, grow our economy, and improve our transportation infrastructure,” said Senator Fuschillo.
The following projects will be funded through the New York Works Highway and Bridge Project Acceleration Program for 2013-14:
- Pavement Rehabilitation of Sunrise Highway between Egypt Lane and Etna Road in East Hampton ($24 million)
- Route 25: Tucker Lane to the end of Route 25 ($12.6 million)
- Replacement of the Superstructure of Carlls Straight Path over the Long Island Expressway ($25.2 million)
- Repaving Sunrise Highway from the Wantagh State Parkway to the Nassau/Suffolk County Line ($16.5 million)
In addition, $1.8 million will be appropriated for a pilot program to install bridge hit detection and warning systems on the Northern and Southern State Parkways. The new systems are designed to prevent trucks from illegally entering the parkways and striking bridges. These bridge strikes often cause extensive damage and traffic delays. The pilot program follows a public hearing Senator Fuschillo held last October examining ways that commercial vehicle bridge strikes can be prevented.
