Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray, and Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby today unveiled new speed awareness signs on Centennial Avenue in Roosevelt to improve safety for students at Centennial Avenue Elementary School. Senator Fuschillo secured state funding for the Town of Hempstead to purchase and install the signs.

Speed awareness signs are electronic signs that notify drivers of the speed at which they are travelling. These signs have proven very effective in slowing motorists and preventing speeding, especially in school speed zones.

Two speed awareness signs, one for each direction, were installed along Centennial Avenue to help prevent speeding near the two schools. The 2’x3’ signs are programmable and, if desired, can be turned off when school is not in session.

"Drivers who speed near schools endanger the safety of students and parents.  These new speed awareness signs will help deter speeding and make Centennial Avenue safer for children, parents, and drivers,” said Senator Fuschillo.
