Statement by Senator David Carlucci on Being Named Chairman of the Senate Mental Health Committee

David Carlucci

January 27, 2013

“There is no higher calling than having the chance to advocate for the welfare and well-being of all New Yorkers, especially those with mental illnesses and developmental disabilities.  So many rely on having access to quality services and programs, and we have an obligation as public servants to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves.   As Chairman of the Senate Mental Health Committee, I will continue to fight for better access and care for all individuals.

“This is a chance to solve complex problems, beginning with our brave veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.   The challenges are real, and as many will face the prospect of PTSD, this is an opportunity to examine new ways to expand healthcare services, including insurance coverage, for those suffering long after they have returned from combat.  We must ensure that anyone diagnosed with autism, including their families, have the vital services and support structure that they need.

“I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to ensure we have the full funding available to provide the services that all New Yorkers need to live a better quality of life.”
