Senator George Maziarz (R-C, Newfane) announced that several libraries in his district will benefit from Public Library Construction Grant Program funds. The grants are made from $14 million in capital funds for public library construction provided in the 2012-2013 state budget.
The awardees are as follows:
- NIOGA Library System will receive $43,482 to accomplish technology upgrades at its computer training center and e-mobile training lab to make both facilities ADA-compliant
- Hoag Library in Albion will receive $137,466 to help cover costs associated with the construction of its new library building
- Lee-Whedon Memorial Library in Medina will receive $112,110 towards its ongoing roof replacement project
- North Tonawanda Public Library will receive $59,130 for exterior renovations to features including the courtyard wall, waterfall, pools, and roof soffit
- Lockport Public Library will receive $24,977 to repair masonry on the exterior of the original library building
“As a result of these awards, nearly $400,000 in state funds are coming back to our district to improve community libraries,” Senator Maziarz said. “These are important projects that will enhance public safety and continue library access and programming.
Public Library Construction Grants are intended to help libraries with such tasks as accommodating users with disabilities, promoting energy efficiency, facilitating internet access, and rehabilitating old building spaces. Almost half of the public libraries in New York are more than sixty years old and therefore are in need of many of these kinds of upgrades.
