State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I – Schenectady) had the honor and privilege to speak at the 2013 Fallen Firefighters Memorial Ceremony in Albany on October 8th. The annual ceremony is held during Fire Prevention Week and honors those who gave their lives in the line of duty. The memorial was first dedicated in 1988 and now holds 2,381 names on the wall.

"It is important that we always remember, and recognize, the service -- and sacrifice -- made by our firefighters," Senator Farley said. "On behalf of the New York State Senate, let me express our gratitude and appreciation to our firefighters and their families."

This year’s ceremony honored 9 individuals. They were Michael J. Chiapperini of West Webster Fire Department, Tomasz M. Kaczowka of West Webster Fire Department, Ronald J. Keddie of Sheridan Fire Department, Richard A. Nappi, of New York City Fire Department, Gerard Marcheterre of Borodino Fire Department, Harry L. Davidson of Winona Lake Fire Department, George W. Dove of Skaneateles Fire Department, Isaac L. Ranson of East Clinton Fire Department, and James P. Wickham of Cutchogue Fire Department.

Senator Farley said the memorial "serves to remind us of the daily hazards faced by all of our firefighters, and of their dedication, commitment and heroism in serving and protecting the public."

The official New York State Memorial is located on the Empire State Plaza, adjacent to the Egg. The memorial serves as a permanent reminder that New Yorkers will never forget the service or sacrifice a firefighter provides.
