Senator Martins Delivers Increased CHIPS Funding for Seventh Senate District

Investment in Infrastructure Seen as a Key For Job Creation

The villages in the Seventh Senate District as well as the Town of Hempstead and Town of North Hempstead will see a significant increase in funding from the Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS) as a result of Senator Jack M. Martins working with his colleagues and Governor Andrew Cuomo to make investments in infrastructure a priority in the state budget.

The Senator announced as lawmakers put the final touches on the 2013-14 state budget that the plan includes$75 million of increased funding for the CHIPS program, the first increase since the 2008-09 Budget. “The key components of the state budget will once again be tax relief for middle class families and job creation. By giving our communities here in the Seventh Senate District and throughout the state the ability to invest in their infrastructure will go a long way in growing our local economies in addition to our statewide economy,” Senator Martins said.

"During these difficult fiscal times, this $75 million increase in CHIPS funding is a big victory for our state's localities,” said Governor Cuomo “I commend the members of the Legislature that worked hard to ensure that these funds are included in our state budget."

CHIPS funding assists municipalities in maintenance and repair of roads and highways. Under the CHIPS funding allocation in the new state budget, Nassau County will see an over $793,000 increase in CHIPS funding alone, a 12.82 percent increase over last year; the Town of Hempstead will see an over $606,000 increase in funding and the Town of North Hempstead will see nearly $140,000 addition funds due to the work of Senator Martins. In addition, each of the villages in the Seventh Senate District will see an over 20 percent and, in many cases, over 25 percent increase in funding over last year. The increases allocated to individual communities are as follows:

· Town of Hempstead $2,718,955 total 28.69 percent increase over last year

· Town of North Hempstead $642,820 total 27.75 percent increase over last year

· Village of Baxter Estates $11,479 total 26.60 percent increase over last year

· Village of Bellerose $16,844 total 26.66 percent increase over last year

· Village of East Hills $172,443 total 26.65 percent increase over last year

· Village of East Williston $47,573 total 26.66 percent increase over last year

· Village of Floral Park $187,687 total 26.60 percent increase over last year

· Village of Flower Hill $105,865 total 26.11 percent increase over last year

· Village of Great Neck $113,376 total 25.43 percent increase over last year

· Village of Great Neck Estates $63,204 total 26.58 percent increase over last year

· Village of Great Neck Plaza $21,860 total 22.76 percent increase over last year

· Village of Kensington $26,220 total 26.85 percent increase over last year

· Village of Kings Point $141,178 total 26.54 percent increase over last year

· Village of Lake Success $62,706 total 26.65 percent increase over last year

· Village of Manorhaven $45,546 total 27.10 percent increase over last year

“This funding will enable municipalities to make road, highway and bridge improvements and, in doing so, will promote job growth and economic development,” said Senator Martins

The Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS) was established by the Legislature in 1981. The funds go directly to local governments to support repairs to the highways, bridges, and roads that they operate and maintain.
