This Saturday, July 13, State Senator Jack M. Martins and over 340 local volunteers will be hosting the 2013 Senator Jack Martins Classic at the Dutch Broadway School, 1880 Dutch Broadway in Elmont. The fun-filled day will include a 3-on-3 Basketball tournament, Slam Dunk contest, 3-Point Shoot-Out, Half-Court Shot Challenge, Wheelchair Basketball, 7-on-7 Football, Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse, Soccer Exhibition and Tournament, Soccer Shoot-Out, Boxing Demonstration, a Fitness Challenge and much more. The event is free for any participant and any spectator.
The day begins at 10 am sharp (Rain date: Sunday. July 14, 2013, 10 am sharp).
Last year, approximately 6,000 children, young people and adults came to the event which featured 3-on-3 basketball, soccer, football, lacrosse and specialized games. This year’s attendance is expected to be even greater.
In addition to the basketball tournament, local stars from the New York Cosmos, Elmont Soccer Club and Villanova University soccer players will be participating in the event and sponsoring the Soccer Cup challenge in memory of the Rodgers-Dennis family. Area high schools and teams from the greater community will compete in a fast paced soccer tournament.
Local boxing greats and NY Daily News Golden Glove Champions, Herve Duroseau, Tyrone James and Titus Williams will officiate and give pointers to boxing enthusiasts in an inflatable arena with specialized oversized gloves.
A crowd favorite is the Henry Viscardi School-Elmont Memorial High School wheelchair basketball game featuring Elmont athletes taking on the Henry Viscardi School. This is the third time the two have met – Viscardi has taken the first two matches.
In addition, 7-on-7 football games will be played in memory of Stephen Wonge and David Dangerfield, a 9-11 firefighter. Buffalo Bills player, Jordan Dangerfield, will help supervise the games and lend coaching advice.
The Old Skool versus New Skool Lacrosse Classic will also be held.
A fitness test sponsored by PAGE31 Magazine, Valencia Gym and AB-Solute Fusion founder Lanceleot Theobald will also put any participant or spectator to the test.
A slam-dunk contest and a 3-point shoot contest are highlights of the day.
One of the new additions to the tournament is BET TV personality, DJ Monumental, of 106 and Park Television show’s “Monumental Half Court Shot Challenge.” The challenge is a half- court shot by participants for special prizes donated by music star DJ Monumental of 106 and Park.
Lunch, drinks, events and all things associated with the tournament including give-aways are free for all players and spectators.
